Young Muslims from all over New Jersey are coming together to raise money for the needy in East Africa.  All net proceeds are donated to Islamic Relief.

The second annual Ramadan for Relief fundraising dinner is co-hosted this year by Islamic Relief (IR-USA) and the Rutgers University Muslim Alumni Association (RUMAA). This year’s event is focused on Feeding the Forgotten.  Money raised will go towards efforts to help those hungry in East Africa.

According to a hadith in Sahih Muslim, The Prophet (may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “Wealth does not diminish by giving charity. Allah raises the honor of one who forgives; and one who serves another (displaying humility) seeking the pleasure of Allah, Allah will exalt him in ranks.”

As part of our program on June 18th, we will have the Honorable Hany Mawla, Esq. The topic of his speech is entitled, “On Fairness and the Rule of Law in the Arab World: How Rutgers, Its Alumni and their Scholarship Can Play a Vital Role in the Conversation”. Judge Mawla (LC ’95) is the first Muslim American judge appointed to the NJ Superior Court in history. He is currently serving in the Family Division of the Court in Somerset County.

• Founder – American Muslims for Corzine – first Statewide Muslim mobilization effort for a gubernatorial campaign in NJ
• Event Chair (current) – United for Change 2011 Conference

Once again, welcome aboard, Br. Salim!

This past summer we elected the first Board of the Rutgers University Muslim Alumni Association (RUMAA).  Since then a Board of seven alumni has been hard at work laying the foundation for this organization.  We have written a Constitution and By-Laws and we just recently have been approved by Rutgers University as a chartered alumni group!

The mission of RUMAA is the following:
1.  To develop and maintain a network of professional and social ties between Muslim alumni of Rutgers University
2.  To contribute to Muslim life on campus and to the Rutgers University community at large.

We hope to accomplish these goals through holding an annual reunion, intramural sports leagues on campus, and other events for alumni.  We also plan to serve undergraduates on campus through mentoring and establishing a scholarship.  Finally, we hope to increase our presence in the Rutgers community by working with other groups across the three campuses and by establishing a Muslim house and re-establishing a Muslim chaplaincy in New Brunswick.

To accomplish these goals, we will need your help!  If you expressed an interest in one or more of these goals on an earlier survey, you may be contacted by one of our committees.  However, we would encourage you to take the initiative and contact any of the Board members below to express an interest in helping out.
