As salaamu ‘alaykum wa rahmatullah
To all Rutgers University Muslim Alumni:
In years past, there have been attempts to organize and launch a Muslim Alumni Association at Rutgers. Many Muslim alumni felt the need to have an organization which would be able to facilitate networking, social events and the ability to contribute in a positive way to both Muslim life on campus and to the university community at large. However, for a number of reasons, these efforts to create such an organization never came to fruition.
In the fall of 2009, a group of RU Muslim alumni and current students began discussing the possibility of once again making the effort to bring into being a group that serves Muslim graduates of Rutgers. At the current time, there is a Steering Committee in place that is directing this process. At the present time, the effort consists mainly in reaching out to RU Muslim alums, collecting names and contact information, trying to get an accurate sense of what the community of Rutgers Muslim alumni would like to in a potential association, and electing an initial Board that will then be charged with the tasks of formalizing the organization’s focus and direction and carrying it forward.
The Steering Committee members are as follows:
- Donna (Naqiyba) Auston
- Rami Elsawah
- Nidal Hozien
- Mostafa Khalifa
- Faraz Khan
- Amro Mosaad
We would like the Rutgers University Alumni Association (RUMAA) to be truly reflective of the diversity of the Muslims who have graduated from the university. As such, we encourage believers of all races and ethnicities, genders, ages, professions, and so forth to register their information with us and to become involved in the RUMAA. Also, we would like involvement from graduates of all campuses, New Brunswick, Newark, and Camden, as well as alumni who attended Rutgers as undergrads and those who have received degrees from any of the graduate/professional schools at Rutgers.
Asalaamu `alaikum,
RUMAA Steering Committee
